Congratulations to Dr. Eva Maria Hille on her latest commentary in The American Journal of Bioethics: „Biases as Risk Factors to Patient Security? A Taxonomy of Algorithmic Harm in Health.“ ✨

➡️ Read it here.

💡 In this open peer commentary, Eva takes a critical theoretical stance on bias. She argues for distinguishing between harmful and non-harmful biases, referring to Joel Feinberg’s definition of harm, and she further develops the sociotechnical harm taxonomy for algorithmic systems by Renee Shelby, PhD et al. (2023) for the health context. In doing so, she responds to John D. Banja, Yao Xie, Jeffrey R. Smith, Shaheen Rana and Andre L. Holder’s article, ‚Mitigating Bias in Machine Learning Models with Ethics-Based Initiatives: The Case of Sepsis‘. Eva presents a system for analysing harms caused by the Epic Sepsis Model (ESM) and similar models – to broaden the understanding of patient harm.
