Ingrid Ullmann at TU Delft

In October 2022, I had the chance to spend one month as a guest researcher at the Microwave
Sensing, Signals and Systems (MS3) group of Delft University of Technology. As a postdoc at the
Institute of Microwaves and Photonics this represented an excellent opportunity to visit one of the
most renowned research groups in our community. The MS3 group, chaired by Prof. Alexander
Yarovoy, is one of the world-leading research groups in the field of radar.
It all started in July 2022, when I had a video conference with Prof. Yarovoy. That was just a few days
after I had learned that EmpkinS offers funding for research stays abroad. So I seized the chance and
asked if it was possible to spend some time at their group as a guest researcher. We agreed on
October and so on October 1 st I left for the Netherlands.
The team was very nice and welcoming and during the next four weeks, we worked together in the
field of radar-based human activity recognition.
On the weekends I had time to explore the city of Delft, which is indeed a lovely little Dutch city, as
well as other parts of the Netherlands like the Hague, Rotterdam and Leiden, just to name a few.
As an outcome of this time, you can now find our joint journal publication “A Survey on Radar-Based
Continuous Human Activity Recognition” published in the IEEE Journal of Microwaves. We also
submitted a joint conference publication to the European Radar Conference (EuRAD) 2023, which
just recently got accepted. And I hope our good collaboration will continue in the future!
I had a great time in Delft and my stay opened up new perspectives for my research, and, as the Delft
colleagues said, also for theirs. Thanks EmpkinS for making this possible!
